Biography
Jay is an electrical engineer and licensed commercial general contractor with previous experience in real estate development. In 2009, he and his wife, Diane, founded Boulder Kind Care (BKC) a medical marijuana business with a retail center and cultivation facility. His focus centered on production operations.
One of the keys to success at BKC was the ability to consistently product large amounts of high quality, pharmaceutical-grade cannabis. It was Jay’s vision, designing state-of-the-art facilities and processes that led to BKC’s success.
Toward the end of 2012, Jay was approached by a group of business men in Connecticut, and was asked to help them compete for one of only four licenses that the state was going to issue for the cultivation of cannabis and the manufacture of cannabis products. The group won the license. A week later three of Jay's clients were awarded licenses in Massachusetts out of 20 total licenses awarded. This was the beginning of Canna Advisors.
Canna Advisors has achieved great success assisting clients across the country in obtaining competitive state licenses, assembling key industry talent, and designing state-of-the-art cultivation, manufacturing, and dispensary facilities. Recently, a Canna Advisors client in Nevada was one of three licensees in the state to be approved for cultivation in a greenhouse – a testament to the quality of the facility design.
Canna Advisors is proud of the 83% success rate of obtaining licensing for clients. We've helped clients in numerous states develop well-constructed winning marijuana license applications.
Current Wins: Nevada- 8 clients/8 wins, Illinois- 3 clients/2 wins, Massachusettes- 6 clients/4 wins, Connecticut- 1 client/1 win

Jay what advice would you give someone who has 25+ years of Corporate and Private Business experience who wants to begin a new career in the Cannibis Industry?
I'm primarily interested in the growing side of the business but am interested in all facets of the industry. I live in a state that may be one of the last to legalize and am anxious to relocate to a state that is legal. I'm financially secure and would like to begin working with someone who could teach me all facets of the business. The opportunity is far more important than the compensation at this point. After years as an employer, I welcome the opportunity to become a employee once again! Thanks
Hi Stewart. I don't know what your experience is, but I can tell you that as the cannabis industry continues to mature, there are many opportunities for smart people from many professional disciplines. Also, depending on what state you live in, you may have an opportunity to get involved directly with cultivating/processing/dispensing. Send me a note with your background and the state you live in, and I'll send you a more specific suggestion. Thanks, Jay
What is the biggest mistake you see made in cannabis business license applications?
As you're experienced in writing and reviewing cannabis business licenses, you've probably had a chance to see what does and doesn't work in the application process. What is the biggest mistake you see made in cannabis business license applications?
The process of competing for a state cannabis business license is complex, and there are many moving pieces above and beyond the actual application. If I were to identify the "Biggest mistake" I've seen made over the years, its that applicants under estimate the complexity and time required to complete and submit a winning package.
